I hope that Roland will eventually add a Favorites option and a way to search the patches with a keyword. There are two buttons along the bottom of the display you can use to look for patches by Bank or Category (bell, electric piano, vocals, bright and soft pad, etc.).

You can also get to the patches by clicking the patch name on the display and it will bring up a menu with eight banks with the patches that reside in them. On the left side of the display are two buttons to skim through the patches. Besides the several types of synthesizer and sampler-based patches, there are also rhythm sets you can use for drums and/or percussion on your tracks. Roland has included nearly anything you’d ever need to compose a track. There are over 900 of them within the many banks. The first thing I wanted to do was audition some of the patches that ship with the plugin.
This can be expanded to see many other settings, but I will get to that a bit later. When it is first loaded you’ll see its clean and simple looking interface. It was easily recognized by my DAW and soon after I was adding it to a new project. Once the plugin is purchased, you’re able to download it from your account using the Roland Cloud Manager. I opted for a free account with the Roland Cloud, checked out the lite version of Zenology (included with a free account) and proceeded to purchase a lifetime key for XV-5080. An internet connection is required to authenticate the software.
Most major plugin types are supported and it will run on computers with an Intel Core2Duo or better CPU. I didn’t see any mention of support for Catalina.

The plugin will run on a PC with Windows 7 (or higher) and Mac with OS X 10.12-10.14. It included a large LCD display, 128 voice polyphony, PCM-based 32-part multitimbral synthesis, many modulation options, Roland/Akai sample library compatibility, several DSP effects and it was compatible with the SRX Expansion Board series. Many described it as Roland’s “ultimate sound module” and it was built upon their past synths such as the JV-2080, Super JD and JD-990.
The original rackmount hardware version of the XV-5080 was released in the year 2000. The lifetime key feature is a new option Roland added just recently. Basically if you didn’t keep paying the monthly or yearly fee, your access to the plugins went away. Previously those other cloud-based plugins were available only through the per-month or yearly subscription models. The most basic of those is not really a subscription at all, but is a free account that includes a lite version of one of their new plugins (Zenology) and the option to purchase a lifetime key for other plugins. The number of plugins you have access to depends on the subscription model you’ve chosen. I won’t list every plugin available, but there are many to choose from on their website. Every so often Roland will add a new product to their growing list of plugins.

Roland Cloud is an online software service which allows you to subscribe on a per-month or yearly basis. For this review I will be focusing on one of their latest Roland Cloud software plugins the XV-5080.
They also have several other types of products in their lineup such as acoustic and electronic drums, amplifiers, digital wind instruments, iOS/Android apps, and much more. Roland is the musical instrument company with a huge following, especially in the synthesizer space. A retro PCM synth monster is reintroduced in virtual form for modern times … and it’s still a monster.
